Kilonova Seekers (GOTO): finding cosmic explosions in telescope data online
For anyone: a Zooniverse project in which volunteers help the GOTO (Gravitational-wave Optical Transient Observer) observatory find kilonovae, the cosmic explosions triggered by neutron stars and black holes merging in distant galaxies. GOTO has two sites, on La Palma and in Australia, each with 16 telescopes covering over 80 square degrees of the sky, giving all-sky coverage every 2 nights. New data are uploaded continuously (the last upload at the time of checking was on 4 October 2026) because humans are good at handling uncertainty and spotting anomalies; participation is online with no deadline.
