Folding@home: a computer as part of a global supercomputer for biomedical research
For anyone: the Folding@home distributed computing project uses a participant's idle computer power for biomedical research (cancer, Alzheimer's, Ebola and other diseases); it is free and no account is required to start. Participants download a client for Windows, macOS or Linux and install it: it fetches small pieces of simulations in the background, returns the results and awards points, and participants can join a team or start one. The project has run since October 2000 and is led by Greg Bowman and the Folding@home Consortium of academic labs.
